For a more harmonious profile

While a prominent, angular chin has a “manly/energetic” effect – to phrase it positively – a chin that’s too big will quickly be classified as “brutal” – and that can have a negative impact on the entire person.

We need to differentiate, though, why the chin is perceived as big, and how a chin reduction may be carried out at the Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery:

  • A double chin or a chin that’s bolstered well with fatty tissue can be reduced by means of liposuction.
  • If the jawbone is particularly large and prominent, part of the bone may be surgically removed.

Faq on Chin Reduction

Who may benefit from chin reduction?

Women in particular will suffer if their chin is too large and angular, which in a feminine face may easily appear as too “coarse”, too “masculine”. A chin reduction may make the facial proportions more feminine.

For men with an extremely large, angular chin, a chin reduction may be the way to achieve a more friendly aura.

The team around Dr. Jens Baetge will be happy to advise you in detail about which possibilities for a chin reduction exist in your particular case. Please feel free to contact the team of Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery about this.

How do we conduct a chin reduction?

The chin reduction will be conducted under general anaesthesia at the Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. The operation can be conducted via the oral cavity, i.e. by means of an incision at the inside of the lower lip, or from the outside, by means of an incision underneath the chin. A small surgical bone fraise is used to hone down the jawbone until the desired shape will be attained. An alternative method involves sawing out a bone wedge from the inside of the lower jawbone; then, a titanium brace will be screwed onto the lower jaw.

What is important following a chin reduction?

As a rule, no prolonged stay at Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery will be necessary afterwards. After the chin reduction, the chin area will first be swollen, which is why the final result can only be evaluated with certainty after a week.

Cooling compressions and sleeping with the upper body raised will help ease the swelling. In case of sutures inside the oral cavity, thorough oral hygiene is important. Moreover, during the healing process, you should only eat soft food and limit the intake of beverages to water and tea. A dressing will support the chin area during the first ten days. After eight days, the stitches will be removed at the Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery; in case of an operation via the oral cavity, the sutures used are self-dissolving.

We will inform you comprehensively in a detailed personal consultation about any potential risks as well as how we will proceed with the chin reduction in your individual case. Please feel free to contact us about this.
