For an Ideal Centre of Your Face

The nose may well be the most characteristic facial feature – and will  stay this way even after a nose correction / rhinoplasty.

As a sensory organ, the nose not only transmits factual information – about the state of our environment, about food and drink, cleanliness and freshness. Scents are transmitted directly to the brain’s limbic system where emotions have their origin and can thus exert an influence on one’s mood. The nose is able to capture and interpret even the most subtle of smells.

However, those who have only a limited or impaired sense of smell may suffer from an oblique nasal cartilage. A nose correction at the Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery can remedy this so that patients will be able to breathe freely again and to get a new feeling of well-being.

Your Nose Correction Experts

Of course, we at Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery are aware that the nose also fulfils a central aesthetic function. As an eye-catcher in the centre of the face the nose may fit the face or appear to be relatively too big, too small, too wide, too long, too short or quite simply, askew. Even a curved nose is considered annoying by many people.

An aesthetic nose correction/rhinoplasty may harmonise the entire face and thus lead to increased self-confidence, self-esteem and an improved joie-de-vivre.

Still, one should always be aware that there is no one ideal nose that fits everybody. All there is is a nose that best matches each individual face, type and body harmony. It is particularly important for us at Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery to positively enhance each person’s individual facial traits by a nose correction and to make sure that the nose harmoniously fits the entire face.

FAQ on Nose Correction

Who may benefit from a nose correction?

Most people would like to have their nose corrected for aesthetic reasons. But sometimes the focus is on a purely functional improvement of nose breathing, such as in cases of an oblique nasal septum. It is even possible to conduct a combined operation, correcting the nose in terms of functional improvement and removing aesthetic shortcomings at the same time. An aesthetic nose correction should only be performed once the skull is fully developed.

Dr. med. Jens Baetge and his team will be happy to advise you in detail about which possibilities exist in your particular case. Please feel free to contact us about this.

How do we conduct a nose correction?

At the Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, nose correcting surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. Then, it is also advisable to stay for two or three days at our clinic in Nuremberg.

In order to reach those elements of the nose that give it its shape during a nose correction, we use what’s called the closed approach. For this, we perform invisible access incisions inside the nostrils in such a way that it is not necessary to completely lay open the cartilage and the nasal bone. Via this closed approach, the nasal septum, cartilage, and nasal wings are easily accessible. In this way, the nasal septum may be straightened or pieces of cartilage may be removed in order to correct the shape of the patient’s nose tip according to their wishes.

If patients desire a different shape for the bridge of their nose, this is usually done via an open approach. For this, the skin cover of the nose is carefully separated from the bone and the cartilage structure so that it can then be optimally corrected. Using special operation tools, annoying knobs may be straightened and the bridge of the nose can be evened.

In some cases, it may even be advisable to fill irregularities in the bridge of the nose by means of cartilage transplants. Similarly, a nose that is felt to be too small can be enlarged.

What is important following a nose correction?

Directly after the operation, the team at Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery will provide cooling pads to mitigate swellings inside the nose and around the eyes. Breathing through the nose will at first be considerably restricted. Possibly, the nose will have to carry a tamponade for one or two days. In some cases, patients will receive a nasal cast after the operation in order to optimally stabilise the operated area and support the healing process.

During the first 24 hours after the operation, we recommend our patients to rest in bed. The next day, they may already take short walks; this helps dissolve the swelling in the nose, since this very light exercise will promote the blood transport via the veins. In rare cases, a nose suction conducted at the clinic in Nuremberg may make sense and will be felt as a relief. Already a few days after the operation, the body will recover and patients will feel fitter. Still, during the first weeks after the operation, care should be taken to avoid significant increases in blood pressure. Taking a hot shower, washing your hair while bending your head down, and any form of physical exertion are taboo. Alcohol and nicotine are also detrimental to the healing process.

After 14 days, the swellings and haematomas will usually have disappeared. However, the internal wound healing is in fact a longer-lasting process which may take up to half a year or even longer.

We will inform you in a detailed personal consultation about how we will proceed with the nose correction in your individual case. Please feel free to contact us about this.

Which malpositions may be corrected by a nose operation?

At the Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, we are able to correct the nose both in terms of aesthetics and in terms of function. During a nose operation for aesthetic reasons it is possible to optimise the tip of the nose, the wings of the nose, the bridge of the nose, and the length of the nose. If your nasal breathing is impeded, a functional nose correction will be the treatment of choice, dealing with nasal air flow.

Which nose correction methods are there?

Rhinoplasty can be performed via the open or the closed approach. The closed approach is used for correcting the formative nasal elements such as nasal septum and the nose wings’ cartilage tissue. The access incisions are being placed invisibly at the inside of the nostrils. With this method, it is not necessary to completely lay open cartilage and bone.

The open approach, in which the skin cover of the nose is gently separated from the cartilage structure and the bone, is the method of choice for achieving a desired change in the shape of the ridge of the nose.

How long will a nose surgery in Nuremberg last?

Rhinoplasty performed by us will take between 1 and 3.5 hours. The exact duration will depend on the individual treatment effort and varies from one patient to the next.

Will tamponades be used during the nose surgery?

At the Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, we use tamponades only in some cases. The decision is taken according to the respective individual situation.

Does a nose surgery hurt?

A nose surgery does generally entail hardly any pain. However, there will be a light feeling of pressure after the operation caused by wearing a brace. The nasal swelling after the operation are comparable to a cold which limits nasal breathing. Generally speaking, the swellings will go away after about one week, and the feeling of pressure will disappear.

What is important before a nose surgery?

For at least 2 weeks before the nose correction date, you should not take any blood-thinning medication such as Aspirin. Also, you should limit your nicotine consumption as much as possible, since smoking may have a negative impact on wound healing. Also, for 2 weeks before and after the nose surgery, you should not take any nutritional supplements.

When will I be presentable again after a nose surgery and will be able to do sports?

About 1–2 weeks after nose surgery performed in Nuremberg, you will be presentable again and can pick up your daily activities. However, sports, exercise, physical exertion and heavy work should not be started any earlier than 6 weeks after the operation, and this start should be very gentle and easy at first. Particular attention must be taken in all types of contact sports.

When will the swellings and haematomas disappear after a nose surgery?

Haematomas and swellings will in most cases have receded after about 14 days. However, the internal wound healing process may take up to half a year or even longer.

Can an aesthetic nose correction be combined with nasal septum surgery?

Yes, combining an aesthetic nose correction with nasal septum surgery is possible and often even makes good sense. These days, such a combined treatment is current practice.

Will the health insurance take over the cost for the nose surgery?

The cost of the nose surgery may be taken over by the health insurance if the operation is performed for medical reasons. Purely aesthetic nose corrections will generally not be taken over by the health insurance.

How much does a nose surgery in Nuremberg cost?

The costs for a nose correction at our Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery start at 4,500 €. Depending on the treatment effort, these may, however, vary from patient to patient. We will be happy to prepare an individual cost calculation for you during a personal consultation.
