Lower Eyelid Tightening - Supporting the Sensitive Eye Region
Our eyes are considered to be our most important sense. They are our door to the world and open up our look: to ourselves and our surroundings. So it’s for good reason that Humphrey Bogart’s legendary phrase “Here’s Looking At You, Kid“ has become the epitome of romance in difficult times.
Our team in Nuremberg is well aware that the skin around the eyes is particularly tender and thus even more susceptible to the aging process than other facial or body areas. Intense facial expressions, lively laughter, excessive sunbathing, but also sorrow and pain, will leave their traces in the skin.
Beneath the eyes, the so-called tear sacs (lacrymal sacs) may appear, which may be removed by lower eyelid tightening (blepharoplasty) at the Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Incidentally, the name “tear sacs” is misleading; they don’t really have anything to do with the tear ducts. Rather, they are formed by excessive and lax lower eyelid skin and/or a protrusion of eye socket tissue. This is what lower eyelid tightening (blepharoplasty) acts against.

Who may benefit from a lower eyelid tightening?
The goal of a lower eyelid tightening always is a rejuvenation of the area around the eyes. After all, tear sacs make a face appear tired and weary. Everyone who wants to look as young as they feel should definitely consider a lower eyelid tightening (blepharoplasty) at the Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
We will be happy to advise you in detail about which possibilities exist in your particular case. Please feel free to contact us about this.
How do we perform a lower eyelid tightening?
We at the Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery usually conduct the lower eyelid tightening under general anaesthesia. However, since the risk for complications is somewhat higher than in the case of removing hooded eyelids (upper eyelid tightening), we recommend you spend the first night after the operation at our clinic.
The lower eyelid tightening starts with an incision a few millimetres below the edge of the eyelid leading about 1.5cm beyond the outer corner of the eye. The skin of the lower eyelid is thus loosened. It is gently tautened upwards, and excess skin is removed. If necessary, excess fatty tissue will be removed before closing the incision with sutures; even a tightening of the palpebral ligament may be included.
In any case, the goal of a lower eyelid tightening at the Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery is the harmonious transition from the eyelid to the surrounding face so that a beautiful and youthful appearance will again be possible.
What is important following a lower eyelid tightening?
In terms of aftercare, permanent cooling of the eye area is important: this makes the blood vessels contract, decreasing the risk of bleeding, and mitigating swelling. After a lower eyelid tightening, it is also important not to rub your eyes. Small haemorrhages and swellings are normal and will disappear after a few weeks. After five to seven days, stitch removal takes place at the Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. You should refrain from doing sports or exercising for up to six weeks.
With advancing age, it may be necessary to perform another lower eyelid tightening, but experience shows that this will be the case only after ten years or more.
We will inform you comprehensively in a detailed personal consultation at our clinic in Nuremberg about any potential risks of the lower eyelid tightening (blepharoplasty) as well as how we will proceed with our treatment in your individual case. Please feel free to contact us about this.
What is important prior to a lower eyelid tightening?
For two weeks before a lower eyelid tightening, no blood-thinning medication like aspirin and no nutritional supplements should be taken. In a personal consultation at the Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, we provide detailed instruction to our patients as to how to behave before a lower eyelid tightening.
When will the swelling after a lower eyelid tightening go away?
The swellings after a lower eyelid correction will generally disappear after only a few days. At the Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, we use an innovative method which helps reduce swelling after a lower eyelid tightening.
When will I be presentable again after the operation and will be able to do sports?
About 1–2 weeks after a lower eyelid tightening, our patients will as a rule be presentable again. Depending on the individual wound healing process, sports can be begun about 2–6 weeks after the eyelid tightening, but this should be done gently and carefully at first.
How long will the result of a lower eyelid tightening last?
Basically, the result of a lower eyelid tightening is permanent. Due to the natural aging process, however, the skin may eventually loose its resilience once again. If desired, we can then perform another lower eyelid tightening at the Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Our experience shows, however, that such a case will not occur any sooner than 10 years after the first operation.
When can I put on makeup again after my lower eyelid tightening?
Putting on makeup following a lower eyelid correction is possible as soon as the stitches have been removed. This will generally be the case after 5–7 days.
What are the risks connected with lower eyelid tightening?
A lower eyelid tightening is generally considered to be a very low-risk operation. In rare cases, there may be wound healing trouble, scar tension, blood vessel injuries, or post-operative haemmorrhage. Swellings and haematomas will in most cases disappear on their own accord after a few days.
How much does a lower eyelid tightening in Nuremberg cost?
The costs for a lower eyelid tightening in our Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery start at 3,700 €. We will be happy to prepare an individual cost calculation for you during a personal consultation.
Will the health insurance cover the cost of a lower eyelid tightening?
The health insurance will generally only take over the cost of a lower eyelid tightening if there is a medical indication or a certifiable psychological strain due to drooping lower eyelids.
