Natural aging starts early – and the face shows the first traces. Even before one’s 30th birthday, this is often visible – especially between the corner of the mouth, the labial angle, and the edges of the lower eyelids. Wrinkles around the mouth and nose (“nasolabial folds”) or beneath the eyes (“tear sacs” or “lacrymal sacs”) make the face look tired and exhausted. Many so affected agree: this is not a favourable look.

The treatment method that wants to counteract this is the midface lift, i.e. a tightening of the facial skin in the central area of the face. Then the facial expression will again look clear, alert, and youthful. Even more than the cheek lift or the minilift, the midface lift takes into account the individual expression at the centre of the face.

FAQ on Midface Lift

Who may benefit from a midface lift?

A midface lift is appropriate for anyone who wants to give their face a new, sustainably youthful and fresh look. Especially in the case of pronounced tear sacs (lacrymal sacs), nasolabial folds and/or sunken cheeks, the midface lift is a go-to solution. The tightened facial skin will often provide a new feeling of self-confidence – and even boost the whole body feeling.

How do we conduct the midface lift?

For each midface lift, we take into consideration the individual facial structure: characteristic features will remain unaffected. Before the midface lift, we carry out a comprehensive patient consultation, providing information about the opportunities and risks of the treatment, and checking the current situation.

In most cases, we will perform a midface lift under general anaesthesia. This is followed by a short stay in our clinic, usually lasting one night – and during this time, we can monitor the patient medically and are able to act immediately, should a complication occur (which is rarely the case). Depending on the individual treatment effort, a surgical midface lift will take about three hours.

In most cases, all that’s needed is an incision along the edge of the lower eyelid; only rarely is a longer incision, continued carefully towards the temple, called for. Excess tissue will be removed; if necessary, fatty tissue from the region of around the lower eyelid will be repositioned or removed. After healing is finished, the resulting scar tissue is practically indiscernible.

What is important following a midface lift?

Patients will wear a special bandage for 4–5 days, so that the corrected tissue in the centre of the face can stabilise. Possible swellings will be cooled regularly. For a smooth healing process, it is recommended to refrain from doing any sports for 4 weeks, and to not expose the scar tissue to direct sunlight.

Initial scar reddening is usually no reason to worry, for it will disappear on its own after only a few weeks. About 10–14 days after a midface lift, patients will be completely presentable again.

We will inform you comprehensively in a detailed personal consultation about any potential risks as well as how we will proceed with our treatment in your individual case. Please feel free to contact us about this.

What does midface lift mean?

A midface lift is a surgical lifting (tightening) of the central face. During this operation lasting several hours, the sunken tissue in the middle of the face is lifted, and the skin is gently tightened. In this way, the central area of the face can be made to appear younger-looking, lifted, and more voluminous. It will get a youthful fullness. A midface lift can also be combined with a lower eyelid tightening. One incision is carried out along the edge of the lower eyelid. In contrast to a mere eyelid tightening, the midface tightening not only corrects the area around the eyes, but also the deeper structures in the central area of the face, which is important for a longer-lasting result.

Can the midface lift be combined with other operations?

At our Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, we can combine a midface lift with a lower eyelid tightening. A sunken central area of the face often has a negative effect on the eyes, since the central facial structure serves as a support for the lower eyelid. In this way, sagging tissue around the cheekbones can also make the lower eyelid sag.

How long will the result of a midface lift last?

A midface lift provides long-lasting results, since the tissue gets permanently tightened. Still, even this operation cannot stop the natural aging process of the skin so that the treated area may again sag over the years. You can expect the effect to last about 7–10 years.

Which risks are there with regard to a midface lift?

Just like with any other operation, wound healing disturbances, infections, or bleeding may occur after a midface lift. Moreover, the treatment results may slightly change during the healing process. In such cases, a correction may be called for. A face lift is often followed by pronounced swelling which may last several weeks; so you should consider this when planning social or business appointments. Slight wound pain, a feeling of tension, haematomas, and sensibility disorders may also occur. In general, such symptoms will disappear within 14 days.

What is important before a midface lift?

Please let us advise you in person before you decide to go for a midface lift. We will discuss the advantages and drawbacks of different treatment methods. When you decide in favour of a facial tensioning, then we will be happy to plan the next steps together with you. All blood-thinning medication must be discontinued before the treatment. If you have to take medication regularly, please tell us about this in advance. In addition, we recommend to stop smoking before the operation, or at least to significantly reduce the nicotine intake. Also, you should not take any nutritional supplements for at least 2 weeks before and after the treatment.
