Submental Tightening | Nürnberger Klinik for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

Just like the facial skin, the skin tissue below the chin and around the neck changes the older we get. The skin is less tight, wrinkles and folds appear. If at the same time the platysma muscle in the neck region is getting less elastic, then vertical folds may appear at the throat. The vernacular is cruel and calls it turkey neck.

Such longitudinal folds on the throat and neck can, however, be corrected by means of a submental tightening, where “submental” means “below the chin”. After successful treatment, the throat will again be tighter and look more like the youthful column it used to be.

FAQ on Submental Tightening

Who may benefit from submental tightening?

A submental tightening is appropriate for people afflicted by vertical folds in the throat region due to advancing age. In most cases, targeted muscle training as a countermeasure is not enough; that’s why a tightening of the platysma cords is often the go-to method.

How do we perform a submental tightening?

Before conducting a tightening of the platysma cords, we will discuss your correction wishes and ideas, and we will inform you in detail about the way in which we conduct the surgery, and about any risks.

The aesthetic plastic surgery for submental tightening can be conducted with local anaesthesia or general anaesthesia, depending on how comprehensive the operation is.

We will reach the muscle via a discreet incision in the chin area, and from there, we will carefully reshape the muscle. Then, any excess skin will be tightened. For this, we need another incision near the ear. Subsequently, a supporting bandage will help prevent potential swelling and haematomas.

What is important following a submental tightening?

In order to ensure a good result for the submental tightening, a support bandage has to be worn for a few days. Regular cooling of the surgery area will complement the healing process. We will check the healing progress on individually scheduled follow-up appointments.

Just like with any other operation, a recuperative phase of rest is recommended. Especially, no sports or exercise should be performed for several weeks. In how far blood-thinning medication can or should be temporarily suspended will be discussed with you individually.

Potential reddening of scar tissue will as a rule disappear after only a few weeks. During that time, the scar tissue should be protected against direct sunlight, e.g. by applying sunscreen or wearing a scarf, and against heat.

We will inform you comprehensively in a detailed personal consultation about any potential risks as well as how we will proceed with our treatment in your individual case. Please feel free to contact us about this.
